北京大学将于3月27日举行“洛桑理工（EPFL）大学日”。EPFL副校长Vetterli Martin教授将于当日上午举行宣讲会，向北大师生介绍EPFL概况，展示该校学生日常的学习和生活，并帮助北大师生解读赴该校留学的可能。

        洛桑理工大学简介

EPFL is one of the two National Universities of Technology (Ecoles Polytechniques Fédérales)
in Switzerland. EPFL has three missions at the highest international level:

• Research
• Education
• Technology transfer

Located on the shores of Lake Geneva, EPFL brings together a campus of more than 10,000
people with 6500 students, 300 faculty members, and 3500 collaborators. The yearly budget (2006) is 500 million US dollars.

Committed to the advancement of science!

EPFL plays the role of official scientific adviser to the Alinghi team, winner of the 2003 America`s Cup. It is also involved in the new challenge taken on by Bertrand Piccard: completing the first trip round the world in a solar-powered airplane. The project offers an unrivalled vista of experimental possibilities and potential technological spin-offs. The Institute distinguishes itself in many aspects:

• With more than 250 laboratories and research groups on campus (fundamental and applied research), EPFL is one of Europe`s most innovative and productive technology institutes.
  
• EPFL has generated top publications in international journals. There are 77 publications in Nature and Sciences from 1990 to 2006. Today EPFL produces more than 1,700 papers per year in ISI Web of Science. A dozen of EPFL professors are titled as “Highly Cited” scientists in ISI database.
  
• EPFL has a long tradition of recruiting faculty on a worldwide basis and more than 50% of its professors come from abroad; many of them from the top universities worldwide (Stanford, Berkeley, Johns Hopkins,…).
  
• The School`s unique structure facilitates transdisciplinary research and encourages partnerships with other institutions. EPFL emphasizes both fundamental research and engineering applications.
  
• Within EPFL`s Doctoral School, 1500 PhD students share ideas, provide mutual support and intellectual stimulation, and round out their education with high-level specialized courses. PhD students benefit from EPFL`s scientific expertise and excellent infrastructure.

Technology transfer: creating value

The campus offers services and facilities to transform scientific excellence into economic competitiveness, jobs and quality of life. A start-up incubator, coaching services, study programs in entrepreneurship, and innovation programs all serve to stimulate the links between lab and business. The Science Park on campus is home to more than 100 enterprises and numerous investors. EPFL is rich in new technology, research infrastructure, academic partnerships and other numerous forms of collaboration, making it a particularly attractive environment for startups and technology enterprises. EPFL is proud to have Logitech as a company started on its campus.

Education

By its novel structure, the school stimulates collaboration between students, professors, researchers and entrepreneurs. These daily interactions give rise to new and groundbreaking work in science, technology and architecture.

EPFL offers 14 complete study programs at the Bachelor`s and Master`s levels in engineering, basic sciences, computer and communication sciences, life sciences, civil engineering, architecture and environment. Half of the Master`s programs are taught in English.
These study programs are designed to be flexible and modular. They meet the requirements of the Bologna accords and as a result, students can take advantage of a wide array of exchange opportunities, and the degrees they earn are internationally recognized.

Students in EPFL`s School of Continuing Education have the opportunity to strengthen and update their skills and knowledge, giving them a competitive edge in a rapidly evolving professional environment. The School offers a wide range of courses from seminars to postgraduate Master`s degrees. These modular programs can also be adapted to meet individual companies` needs.

International and global

With 110 nationalities represented on campus and more than 60% of its PhD students coming from abroad, EPFL is one of the world`s most international and attractive universities. EPFL puts emphasis on opening up opportunities for its students to gain worldwide study and work experience in partner universities and top high tech industries, for example: Logitech, IBM Watson New York, IBM Zurich, NEC Japan, Qualcom San Diego, Nokia Finland, Ericsson, ABB, Swisscom, and Siemens.
